VAN GOGH UP CLOSE
Philadelphia Museum of Art
Saturday, March 24, 2012
$85

During his stay in Paris from 1886 to
1887, after he moved to Paris from the Netherlands, Vincent van Gogh
significantly revised his portrayal of nature as a result of his
encounter with contemporary trends in painting, including the
Impressionists and his investigation of Japanese art. He began
a more varied and expressive approach as he began introducing
brighter color into his work. He painted many still life
paintings of flowers, including the Blue Vase, experimenting with
color, light and techniques he learned from several different modern
artists before moving on to other subjects. This exhibition
will present some forty-five paintings that demonstrate the artist's
new approach to landscape painting, in which he experimented with
depth of field and focus, closing in on his subject or providing
shifting perspectives on, for example, a field or the corner of a
garden.
