The Mount, was in the Berkshires and it was here that she wrote some of her best-known and successful novels including Ethan Frome and House of Mirth. Day 2 - OLANA/NAUMKEAG
A short drive takes us north to Hudson, NY to visit Olana, former home of Frederick Church and his wife, Isabel. Frederick Church will always be associated with the Hudson River Valley School, often called the first truly American style of painting. The school was not an academic institution but rather a loose association of painters who worked in a similar style. They were colleagues and friends who often traveled together looking for landscapes to sketch. Church and his wife traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East and after an 18 month journey they decided to build a much larger and permanent home, hired an architect and so began their home of Persian, Victorian and Middle Eastern style architecture, now known as Olana. You’ll find the tour fascinating as well as educational. Lunch independently before we cross into Stockbridge, Massachusetts to visit an elaborate 1830’s “Berkshire cottage” surrounded by one of the most beautiful gardens in America. Continue a short distance to our hotel in Pittsfield. Dinner followed by the exciting musical West Side Story at the Barrington Stage Theatre. Meals:B,D
