Day 3 - ESSEX / NEWPORT, RI
After breakfast depart Essex for Newport, Rhode Island, the “Ocean State”. Free time for lunch and shopping in the historic downtown waterfront, filled with cobblestone wharves lined with antique stores, art galleries, specialty shops and restaurants. Meet your local guide at the Visitor’s Center for a driving tour, where you’ll see the historic charm of Newport’s buildings and restored homes. Take in the rugged beauty of Ten-Mile Ocean Drive and the fabulous mansions along tree-lined Bellevue Avenue. Visit Rough Point, once owned by Doris Duke, a mansion with an extensive collection of fine and decorative arts and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, especially selected for you to visit. Check into the Newport Hotel & Marina, surrounded by cobblestone streets and world-famous yachts and neighboring everything in the downtown area. Dinner tonight at the Saltwater Restaurant, located in your hotel. Meals: B,D

Day 2 - ESSEX
After breakfast meet our guide and depart for a visit to the Mark Twain House, a National Historic Landmark and home to one of America’s greatest authors, Samuel Clemens. Later board the Valley Railroad Company, which operates the coal-fired locomotives of the Essex Steam Train, where you will pass through some of the most beautiful country in the state, forests, streams, beautiful vistas and nostalgic towns. At Deep River Landing, board the Riverboat Beck Thatcher for a relaxing trip up the Connecticut River. Return to The Inn to rest before dinner at the lovely Gelston House, followed by a performance of The Music Man at the historic Goodspeed Opera house. Meals: B,D

Day 1 - INDEPENDENCE/NEWARK/WILMINGTON/ESSEX, CT
Arrive mid-day in the historic town of Essex, located on the banks of the Connecticut River and listed as one of “The 100 Best Small Towns in America”. Enjoy lunch at the Griswold Inn, known for good food and its impressive marine art collection. After lunch visit the Florence Griswold Museum, situated on 13 rolling acres, and privileged to serve as the home of American Impressionism. The deluxe Inn at Middletown Hotel, your home for the next two nights, was built in 1810 as a grand residence for the president of Middletown National Bank. Dinner at The Inn. Meals: L,D

Day 4 - NEWPORT / BLOCK ISLAND
After breakfast depart for Point Judith, RI for your ferry ride to Block Island and a 14 mile one hour cruise to the island, described by the nature Conservancy as “one of the 12 last great places in the Western Hemisphere”, and considered by many to be “nature’s treasure of the sea”. Block Island offers 17 miles of beaches, 2 lighthouses, 400 miles of stone walls, 365 ponds, 20 miles of nature trains, 65 inns, 50 gift shops and 12 art galleries. When you arrive on Block Island in the village known as “Old Harbor” you will be met by Howie Rice, who was born and raised on the island, and he will be your guide. Lunch at the historic National Hotel, overlooking the ocean. You will have some time to explore after lunch. Back in Newport, dinner at LaForge Restaurant, situated alongside the Tennis Hall of Fame’s grass courts. Meals: B,L,D

DAY 5 - NEWPORT/HOME
Enjoy breakfast before boarding the bus for the return trip home, stopping for an independent lunch before arriving late afternoon or early evening. Meals: B
